Why taking action will ALWAYS lead to success. We discuss how to fight the fear of failure and get you taking hold of your life.
What if I fail? What if I look stupid? What if I lose money? What if, what if, what if. We have all had this little phrase "what if" come into our minds when we are looking to venturing into unchartered territories. Ever had a great idea, do a little bit of research only for something in your mind to cast doubt on the whole thing? Of course you have. We all have but why? What if we turned the "what if" from a negative into a positive? What if it does work? What if I do get rich? What if I change the world? Sounds like a nicer prospect doesn't it. During this article, we will discuss how to fight fear and find freedom with a few small changes to our mentality.
Fight Your Natural Instinct
“Fears are nothing more than a state of mind.”
Napoleon Hill - Author of "Think and Grow Rich"
Ever since the days of the Sabre-Tooth Tiger, we have always had fear instilled in us. With no natural defences to fight off a mammoth or T-Rex, we had to resort to our intelligence. When faced with fear we always have two options, fight or flight. This is a split second reaction and although most of us would like to say that we would fight, until the moment arise we can not predict what we would do. This is where we need to reprogram our mind. Long gone are the days where we need to worry about what is going to eat us. This has been replaced with the fear of losing stability. Whether it is financial or social. People stay in jobs that they do not enjoy because it pays well, it's comfortable or they believe they can't achieve a better one. Dream jobs are for the fortunate people and I am not one of them, are often thoughts that we store at the back of our mind, whether we know it or not. These are all defence mechanisms designed to keep us in a comfortable place because we all know as humans we love comfort. The problem is, to succeed we need to venture out of the cave and into the light.
How do I do this? What should I do? Everything will seem scary and exciting at the same time. Whatever your goal is, you will have doubts but you need to ignore them and push on. Its easier said than done. Those thoughts are designed to keep you comfortable and unfortunately have been drilled into your thinking for your entire life. From when you were a child, people have always warned you of what could happen if you don't follow the status quo. Parents for years have lovely given examples of other people that have failed and lost everything, pushing their offspring into safe and secure jobs. We need to break free of these images. The best way to combat these thoughts is to tell them off. Sound stupid right? Believe me, when I first heard it I thought the same but it actually works. Call your mind something. Mines called Bob. When I have a thought that is negative or is counter-productive I say "naughty Bob". This does two things. The first is it brings to my attention the negative impact this thought is having and I kill it off straight away. Being aware of your thoughts is the first process to conquering them. The second is I am reprogramming my thoughts to instil positive ones. The brain slowly learns that these thoughts are not needed and so has fewer. Sounds mad but I'm sure that's what they thought of the first caveman that tried to start a fire. Positive thoughts will always lead to positive actions, this is scientifically proven and more can be read in this amazing article. Leave comfort behind and strive for more.
“Thinking will not overcome fear, action will.”
W. Clement Stone
Nothing was ever created by not taking action. As much as we would love to be able to use the force like a Jedi, we are not currently at that stage yet in our evolution. Taking action is the only way that you can achieve what you want to achieve. It is important to remember that taking action will always eventually lead to success. What do I mean by this? Lets uses the example that you have decided to start a business. You have set up the systems, processes and procedures and are ready to sell your service or product. Nothing happens. No sales, no interest. So you look at what has gone wrong and make adjustments. Same result. You repeat the sequence again and again until bang you have a booming business. Now you might be thinking that doesn't happen, they would have run out of money, time or another commodity. The difference between this thinking and the one we are discussing is success. On each occasion, the business owner is taking action and eventual will find success through using his/her past experiences in failure and trying new actions to get a positive result. The odds of failure will always reduce as long as we take action to find the answer to our issue. Failure is just an opportunity to learn something new.
To summerise this we need to look at taking action as the following:
Taking action puts our goals into motion
Failure allows us to reduce the number of constraints on finding success
Learning from our past experiences will always make us stronger for future success
Nothing will be achieved by doing nothing.
Taking action is the only way that success is found. Doing nothing is risky than doing something to reach your goals. Negativity achieves negativity, positivity achieves positivity.
Here is a great post to get your day off to a great start and build those positive action habits
Believe In Yourself
"If you do what you have always done, you'll get what you have always gotten".
Have you heard about the Law of Attraction? Now I'm not going to go into a fairy tale and start saying that if you wish upon a star that your dreams will come true. I'll leave that to Walt Disney. What I do think about the Law of Attraction is that it does have a positive impact on your ability to create action in the most unlikely places. For those of you that haven't heard of the Law of Attraction here is a great link to build your knowledge.
So how does the law of attraction (we will refer to it as LOA) work regarding your call to action? The best way to describe how I believe this to work is to look at the science. Your brain has to process millions of pieces of information every second. From sight to smell, touch to sound, there is a lot going on up there. The idea of the LOA is that it allows your brain to filter out the things that are not important to your goal. Imagine it as being in a library. If we had no librarian or book searching facilities we could spend days/weeks/months looking for the book that we wanted. The idea of LOA is that you tell your brain over and over again that you want something and it will filter out things that are not associated with that goal and find the things that are. For example, you could be a budding wedding photographer who has just started up their business. You keep thinking over and over again in your mind that you WILL make this a success. Your mind is now overloaded with thoughts of being a professional wedding photographer. You walk down the street and you hear a conversation about someone needing a wedding photographer. You whip out your business card and converse. Bang, you have a new client. This situation doesn't happen if your brain isn't tuned in to what your goals are. How many times have you walked down the street and not heard a single conversation because your brain has filtered it all out? This is the power of belief. If you don't honestly believe in yourself, how will your way of thinking and of course how will others? Re-program that brain into believing that you will succeed and you are halfway there. Remember confidence and belief breeds success.
The only thing stopping you from succeeding is you. Nothing else. There is no one else to blame, there are no circumstances that have prevented you from doing what you want to achieve. Nothing. No excuses. Nada. Once you realise that your destiny is in your own hands the only thing left to do is...take action.
